How heavy are manhole covers ?
The weight of manhole covers varies greatly depending on the material, size, load-bearing level, and purpose. The common types and weight ranges of manhole covers are as follows:
1. Classify by material
(1) Cast iron manhole cover (most common)
Grey cast iron (HT) manhole cover
- Lightweight: about 50-80kg (diameter 600mm, load-bearing capacity 10-15 tons)
- Heavy duty: about 90-120kg (diameter 700mm, load-bearing capacity of over 40 tons)
Ductile iron (QT) manhole cover
- Lighter and stronger, it is 10% to 20% lighter than gray cast iron of the same size.
(2) Steel fiber reinforced concrete manhole cover
- Weight: 80~150kg (diameter 600~800mm)
- Features: Low cost, rust proof, but high brittleness, mostly used for sidewalks.
(3) Composite material manhole cover (resin+fiberglass)
- Weight: Only 20-50kg (diameter 600mm)
- Features: Lightweight, anti-theft, corrosion-resistant, but poor high temperature resistance.
(4) Stainless steel manhole cover
- Weight: 60-100kg (diameter 600mm)
- Features: Beautiful, rust proof, commonly used in high-end residential areas or landscape projects.
2. Classify by size
| Diameter(mm) | Weight of cast iron manhole cover(kg) | Weight of concrete manhole cover(kg) |
| 600 | 50~120 | 80~120 |
| 700 | 70~150 | 100~150 |
| 800 | 90~180 | 120~200 |
3. According to the load-bearing level
- A15 level (sidewalk): about 50-70kg
- B125 level (motor vehicle lane): approximately 100-150kg
- D400 level (ports, airports): up to 200kg+
4. Factors affecting weight
- Reinforced design: Concrete manhole covers with steel bars are heavier but bear greater pressure.
- Thickness: Ordinary manhole covers are 50-80mm thick, while heavy-duty manhole covers can reach over 100mm.
- Filler: Some composite manhole covers are embedded with metal skeletons to increase weight.
Precautions
Safety Tip:
1. The handling of cast iron manhole covers requires mechanical assistance (difficult for a single person to lift).
2. Theft risk: Cast iron manhole covers are often stolen and sold as scrap iron, and in some areas, composite materials are used instead.
Selection suggestion:
1. Choose ductile iron (QT500-7) or heavy-duty concrete manhole covers for the motor vehicle lane.
2. Composite materials can be used for green belts to reduce maintenance burden.
If you need the specific weight of the model, you can check the identification nameplate on the manhole cover (such as “QT500-7 D400” indicating ductile iron, bearing 40 tons).
