How to Choose the Right Manhole Cover Load Class for Different Projects
You must pick the right manhole cover for safety. Every project needs a different load class. If the cover is weak, it will break. If it is too strong, it will cost too much money.
Quick Guide: Load Classes (EN 124)
The EN 124 rule groups covers by their strength. Use this table to find yours:
| Load Class | Weight Limit | Where to Use |
| A15 | 1.5 Tons | Gardens and paths for people |
| B125 | 12.5 Tons | Driveways and car parks |
| C250 | 25 Tons | Car parks and road edges |
| D400 | 40 Tons | Main roads and streets |
| E600 | 60 Tons | Ports and factory yards |
| F900 | 90 Tons | Airports |
1. Class A15: Only for People
This is the lightest cover. Use it only where people walk or ride bikes.
-
Where to use: Backyards and garden paths.
-
Warning: Do not use this on roads. Even a car is too heavy for it.
2. Class B125: For Private Cars
This class is good for homes. It can hold a car or a small van.
-
Where to use: Private driveways and sidewalks.
-
Why pick this: It is strong enough for cars but still easy to lift.
3. Class C250: For Slow Traffic
This is a medium-strength cover. It is for places where cars move slowly.
-
Where to use: Small parking lots and near the curb of a road.
-
Why pick this: It is safer for areas with more traffic than a home driveway.
4. Class D400: For Fast Roads
This is the most common cover for streets. It can hold heavy trucks and fast cars.
-
Where to use: City roads and highways.
-
Note: Most public roads require this class by law.
5. Class E600 and F900: For Heavy Industry
These are very thick and heavy. They are for special jobs.
-
E600: Use this in docks or big factories with large forklifts.
-
F900: This is the strongest one. It is only for airport runways.
How to Choose the Best Cover
Follow these three simple steps:
-
Check the weight: What is the heaviest truck that will drive over it? Pick a cover that can hold that weight.
-
Check the speed: Fast vehicles hit the cover harder. So, use a stronger cover for fast roads.
-
Check the rules: If the road is public, you usually need at least D400.
Final Tip: If you are not sure, buy a stronger one. For example, choose C250 if you think B125 is not enough. It is cheaper to buy a strong cover now than to fix a broken one later.
